The United Nations agree that Spirulina cultivation is good! https://springspirulina.com/th/the-united-nations-agree-that-spirulina-cultivation-is-good/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=the-united-nations-agree-that-spirulina-cultivation-is-good Mon, 14 Dec 2020 07:01:45 +0000 https://springspirulina.com/th/?p=1113 Spirulina is affordable, easy to farm and incredibly nutritious, making it the ideal food to fight hunger and malnutrition at home and across the globe! Two branches of the United Nations —the Food and Agriculture Organization and the World Health Organization— agree that Spirulina cultivation is good for the Earth and our stomachs!

Spirulina can be grown with simple resources, mainly sunshine and water. Its cultures flourish in high-PH water, discouraging cohabitation with harmful microbes (like germs and viruses) that cannot survive in such alkaline-heavy habitats. It’s completely natural, safe for children, and an excellent source of protein and vitamins. For many reasons, spirulina is a lifesaver for the UN and really anyone who’s a fan of essential nutrients and clean food.

This all-natural food source shows immense potential for combating worldwide malnutrition and its kind on the environment. Because spirulina is a sort of photosynthetic microalgae, it can also play a pivotal role in the reduction of greenhouse gases. Eating spirulina can truly heal us and the world around us. That’s why the UN is looking at ways to use Spirulina powers to revolutionize food security in communities near and far from us!

Spirulina: an ancient superfood! https://springspirulina.com/th/spirulina-an-ancient-superfood/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=spirulina-an-ancient-superfood Mon, 14 Dec 2020 07:00:47 +0000 https://springspirulina.com/th/?p=1110 Spirulina is the name for a strain of colorful algae whose culinary appeal shot up in recent decades after NASA commended its abundant nutritional strength and revealed their intentions to cultivate it in space. But let’s back up first.

The crop itself has been around for billions of years—approximately 3.5 billion years out of the 4.5 billion that Earth has been around. This makes it one of the oldest living organisms on our planet. This type of algae had been playing a crucial role in balancing carbon dioxide levels and atmospheric oxygen long before the first humanlike species ever walked the Earth.

We can trace consumption of spirulina back to the Aztecs who were taking advantage of its superfood benefits as early as the 1300s. The Aztecs were indigenous to present-day central Mexico and harvested spirulina by skimming it off the surface of Lake Texcoco. They would sundry their bounties, which would harden into cake-like shapes. Aztec messengers were especially fond of spirulina because it supplied them ample energy to complete their excruciatingly long runs. Spirulina has also long been consumed in some African countries, such as Chad.

Today spirulina is a source of inspiration and innovation. Farmers around the world use leftover space to cultivate spirulina as a sustainable, accessible, and nourishing food source. Companies offer spirulina infused foods and cosmetics. Astronauts eat it. Organizations around the world have approved its use as a natural, organic food colorant. Spirulina has really come a long way in a few billion years.

Our Impact https://springspirulina.com/th/our-impact/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=our-impact Tue, 23 Apr 2019 10:25:43 +0000 http://206.189.159.84/th/?p=313 Bangladesh – EnerGaia announced today that it is a winner of a Grand Challenges Explorations grant – an initiative funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. EnerGaia will pursue an innovative global health and development research project, titled “Creating spirulina microentrepreneurs to solve malnutrition”. The main premise being the use of market solutions and microalgae as an effective tool to enhance nutrition and livelihoods.

Grand Challenges Explorations (GCE) supports innovative thinkers worldwide to explore ideas that can break the mold in how we solve persistent global health and development challenges. Out of thousands of applications, EnerGaia’s project is one of 34 Grand Challenges Explorations Round 21 grants announced by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

To receive funding, EnerGaia and other Grand Challenges Explorations winners demonstrated in a two-page online application a bold idea in one of three critical global health and development topic areas. The foundation will be accepting applications for the next GCE round in February, 2019.

EnerGaia is a social enterprise with a global footprint that is seeking to make spirulina a widely adopted source of protein and nutrition in the world. Spirulina is a microalgae, high in protein (60% compared to beef at 23%) contains all 8 essential amino acids, iron and many other micronutrients. EnerGaia aims to achieve this by producing spirulina more efficiently and cleanly with its technology and providing partners with access to this technology. Spirulina is more environmentally sustainable in comparison to traditional sources of protein. For example spirulina requires approximately 500 times less water to produce 1 kilogram of protein in comparison to beef.

EnerGaia’s project will empower hundreds of women in rural Bangladesh with the technology and skills to grow spirulina. By introducing spirulina farming, these women will gain an additional source of income and a high protein, nutrient dense food source. By participating in a 3 month part-time training program, graduates will qualify to engage in a lease-to-own program to start growing spirulina at their homes. The aim is that the proximity to home and flexible work hours will not interfere with other forms of livelihood creation and daily tasks. A portion of each weekly spirulina harvest will go towards adding nutrients to their families’ diet, another portion will go towards payment of the equipment required to grow spirulina and a third portion will be sold to EnerGaia to yield added household income. This project will thus provide both a nutrition intervention and livelihood creation for the low-income Bangladeshi women and their families.

About Grand Challenges Explorations
Grand Challenges Explorations is a US$100 million initiative funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Launched in 2008, over 1400 projects in more than 65 countries have received Grand Challenges Explorations grants. The grant program is open to anyone from any discipline and from any organization. The initiative uses an agile, accelerated grant-making process with short two-page online applications and no preliminary data required. Initial grants of US$100,000 are awarded two times per year. Successful projects have the opportunity to receive a follow-on grant of up to US$1 million.

About EnerGaia
EnerGaia develops innovative technology to produce spirulina more efficiently and cleanly. Originally founded in Bangkok, Thailand, it also has operations in Bangladesh, Singapore, Vietnam and Indonesia. The company works with a variety of partners to grow the adoption of spirulina globally.

Nutritional Benefits https://springspirulina.com/th/nutritional-benefits/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=nutritional-benefits Tue, 23 Apr 2019 09:54:24 +0000 http://206.189.159.84/th/?p=289 Spirulina is a blue-green algae offering exceptionally high protein content and  a remarkably complete composition of vitamins and minerals essential for healthy living. Unlike other potent sources of nutrients and protein Spirulina is low in calories and cholesterol. Below are a few of the highlights for why Spirulina is such an excellent source of your daily nutrition needs:

Dried Spirulina as a potent source of protein

Dried Spirulina is 59% – 65% percent protein which is especially impressive when compared with dried soybean at 40 percent, lentils at 26 percent and peanuts at 25 percent. Perhaps more surprising is that raw beef only contains 23 percent protein. With only 36 kcal calories per 10 grams of dried powder, Spirulina is an excellent source of protein without empty calories.  Additionally, the protein is far more accessible by the human digestive system than most other plant and animal proteins. This means the body can absorb and utilize much more of the available protein with far less energy and stress on the digestive system.

(source: USDA, FAO p. 10)

Complete Source of Amino Acids and Omega 3

In addition to containing omega-3 fatty acid, and being highly concentrated with protein, Spirulina is dense with all 8 essential amino acids that the body does not naturally synthesize. Here is a list of the different amino acids and how your body utilizes them:

  • Isoleucine – required for optimal growth
  • Leucine – stimulates brain function
  • Lysine – needed for producing antibodies, enzymes and hormones
  • Methionine – antioxidant properties
  • Phenylalanine – required for thyroid function
  • Threonine – improves intestinal and digestive function
  • Tryptophane – regulates serotonin
  • Valine – stimulates mental and physical capacity

Protein without cholesterol

An undesirable by-product of many sources of animal protein is cholesterol. Doctors recommend healthy adults consume less than 300 mg or 200 mg if you have diabetes or suffer from heart disease. Consider this, 10 grams of dried spirulina (approximately a large spoonful) carries 5.75 gram protein and 1.3 mg of cholesterol, compared to an equivalent quantity of egg protein containing 300 mg of cholesterol.

(sources: FAO p6 and MAYO Clinic http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/reduce-cholesterol/CL00012)

High concentrations of essential minerals

Remember the expression that eating green is good, well you had no idea just how good it can be. Below is list of some of the essential minerals you receive in 10 gram of dried Spirulina compared with more traditional sources:

Spirulina does not replace a healthy diet, but helps to balance out deficiencies and gives a great boost of energy. As an example, to achieve a recommended daily allowance of many minerals, an adult would need to consume a very large quantity of Spirulina.

  • Iron: Men need 2.8 tbsp Women need 6.2 tbsp (Spirulina) ~ comparable to approximately 450 grams for men and 1000 grams for women of grass fed beef
  • Potassium: 33 tbsp ~ comparable to 1300 grams of bananas
  • Calcium: 110 tbsp ~ comparable to (1000 grams of whole milk)
  • Magnesium: 18 tbsp ~ comparable to 250 grams of walnuts
  • zinc M 55 tbsp 40 tbsp ~ comparable to 2000 grams for men and 1,500 grams for women of spinach

*note: an average tablespoon of dried Spirulina approximately 10 grams

Vitamins and more vitamins

Here is a short list of the alphabet of vitamins in Spirulina: A, B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B7, B8, B9, C, D, E and K.  It would take too long to list all the benefits from this list of vitamins so we decided to highlight just one:

  • β-carotene (beta-carotene) is best known for its red-orange pigment found in carrots. And did you know that the National Cancer Institute of the United States of America has recommended consumption of 6 mg of beta-carotene daily to reduce the risk of cancer. In 4 grams, half a tablespoon of dried Spirulina, you will consume 6 mg, or your daily recommended amount of beta-carotene. (source FAO p. 7)

What is Spirulina? https://springspirulina.com/th/what-is-spirulina/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=what-is-spirulina Tue, 23 Apr 2019 09:49:48 +0000 http://206.189.159.84/th/?p=286 Spirulina is a 3.5 billion year old blue-green algae that converts greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide into usable nutrition, protein, and oxygen. It is a single celled organism that grows in bodies of water that are highly alkaline, that receives direct and intense sunlight and with an average water temperature between 30 to 39 degrees celsius. There are few bodies of water that meet these requirements limiting natural growth to parts of Central Africa, the Lake Chad Basin and Lake Taxcoco, Mexico.

The extraordinary nutritional value of spirulina has been supporting human populations living near naturally growing spirulina for thousands of years. Inhabitants near Lake Chad and the Aztecs consumed it as a supplemental source of protein and nutrition, and during times of extreme famine have survived on a diets consisting purely of spirulina. The enormous potential of this ancient organism was largely unknown away from the few naturally occurring pockets until the 1960’s.

Since its discovery by the wider population an understanding of the immense nutritional benefits have directed a lot of attention towards this simple organism. Labelled as a “superfood” by media outlets; scientists, governments and non-government organizations have used spirulina as a tool to fight malnutrition and as a dietary supplement for people trying to live a healthier life. Even NASA and the European Space Agency are exploring the possibility of spirulina being used as a primary source of nutrition for astronauts.

We at Skyline Spirulina are excited about the enormous potential of spirulina. It is our goal to educate the wider population about the nutritional benefits for people, as well as how its cultivation can be beneficial to the environment. We also want to make sure that we are delivering the very best spirulina, both fresh and powdered.
